Canada Makes History by Advancing to the Round of 16 in FIFA World Cup 2026

New Delhi, June 29: In a remarkable performance, Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in their opening match of the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. This victory, held at the Los Angeles Stadium, marks a historic achievement for Canada as they secure a spot in the Round of 16 for the first time in World Cup history.

From the outset, South Africa appeared dominant, applying pressure on Canada’s defense with aggressive play. They created several promising moves but failed to convert them into goals. Canada, on the other hand, had two excellent opportunities to score in the final minutes of the first half but could not capitalize on them.

A brilliant header from Moïse Bombito was cleared off the line by South African defender Aubrey Modiba, while Tajon Buchanan’s powerful shot was expertly saved by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The first half ended without any goals from either team.

In the second half, Canada adopted a more aggressive approach compared to South Africa. They launched a series of attacks on the South African goal. However, South Africa’s strong defense thwarted Canada’s attempts to take the lead. In the 75th minute, Canada made a strategic move by bringing on star player Alphonso Davies. His speed and exceptional dribbling immediately put pressure on South Africa’s defense.

As the match seemed to be heading into extra time, Canada captain Stephen Eustáquio delivered a stunning shot from outside the box in the second minute of injury time, which found the back of the net. This decisive goal not only secured the win but also sent Canadian fans into a frenzy. With this victory, Canada has advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time, having previously participated in the World Cup in 1986 and 2022, where their journey ended in the group stage.
