New Delhi, July 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s first hydrogen train on Friday. He will flag off the train that will operate between Jind and Sonipat at the Jind railway station. Ahead of the event, PM Modi stated that this marks a significant day for self-reliant India and sustainable development.
Before arriving in Jind, Prime Minister Modi shared a post on the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday morning, saying, “Today, the dream of India receiving its first hydrogen train is about to come true. This is a monumental day for self-reliant India and sustainable development. I congratulate everyone involved in this achievement.”
He also shared a Sanskrit quote, which translates to, “Whether the task is large or small, whatever a person wishes to do, it should be done with complete dedication and new enthusiasm, a quality to learn from a lion.”
It is noteworthy that the country’s first hydrogen train has been designed, engineered, and integrated within India. This train has been developed using indigenous technology, showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in advanced railway engineering. With this development, India will join a select group of nations operating hydrogen-powered trains.
The train operates on hydrogen fuel cell technology, which converts hydrogen into electricity to propel the train. This process produces only water vapor as a byproduct, resulting in zero carbon emissions during rail operations.
Compared to diesel trains, these hydrogen trains eliminate tailpipe emissions, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and fossil fuel imports, and significantly lower noise levels. Unlike traditional electric trains, they do not require continuous overhead electrification infrastructure, as electricity is generated inside the train through hydrogen fuel cells. This makes them a clean and efficient solution for the environment. The use of green hydrogen also helps reduce dependence on electricity generated from fossil fuel-based thermal power plants, aiding India’s transition towards sustainable transportation.
India’s hydrogen train consists of 10 coaches, making it one of the longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains developed to date. It is powered by a 3,200 HP propulsion system, positioning it among the most powerful hydrogen-powered trains currently in operation.
