India Unveils First Quantum Reference Facility in Amaravati

Amaravati, April 14: India has inaugurated its first quantum reference facilities in Amaravati, marking a significant milestone in quantum technology. The unveiling coincided with World Quantum Day.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated the ‘1S Open Access Quantum Facility’ at SRM University and the ‘1Q Quantum Facility’ at Medha Towers.

According to officials, these quantum testbeds will provide essential facilities for testing quantum computing devices and their components. With the launch of these facilities, Andhra Pradesh becomes the first state in India to have a quantum test reference facility, enhancing Amaravati’s status as a hub for testing and certifying quantum computer hardware.

These quantum testbeds are designed to operate at extremely low temperatures, around minus 273 degrees Celsius. They will be beneficial for companies developing quantum equipment, researchers, students, and industry experts.

The 1S facility at SRM University will focus on research, while the 1Q facility at Medha Towers will cater to industrial applications. The event saw participation from representatives of the National Quantum Mission, the Department of Science and Technology, quantum companies, IIT professors, and scientists.

During the event, Chief Minister Naidu expressed pride in achieving this milestone on World Quantum Day, which also coincides with the centenary of quantum science. He noted that the new quantum era in Amaravati began on the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for encouraging the establishment of the Amaravati Quantum Valley. The Chief Minister emphasized that the 1S and 1Q quantum testbeds will play a crucial role in testing and certifying quantum devices. He remarked that it is a matter of pride for Telugu land, which has already made significant contributions to the IT sector, to now become a center for quantum technology.

He stated that just as electricity was essential in the industrial age and the internet in the digital age, quantum technology is crucial in modern times. Countries that advance in this technology will shape the future.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the Amaravati Quantum Reference Facility will become an important resource for Indian researchers. He mentioned that these facilities were completed in just eight months, enhancing the country’s technological capabilities.

Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, noted that establishing quantum reference test facilities is a significant step towards self-reliance. He stated that Amaravati could soon become a national center for AI and quantum technology. He emphasized the need to focus not only on quantum algorithms but also on other areas like atomic and cryogenic technologies, given the changing global landscape. Strengthening technological capabilities is essential.

He also mentioned that these facilities will promote the manufacturing of quantum hardware in India, aiding the country’s journey towards self-reliance.
