Recently, they photographed a remarkable phenomenon known as ‘Moonglint.’ This image showcases the Florida Peninsula and Cuba at night, with a brilliant reflection of moonlight shimmering on the ocean’s surface.
This captivating photo, shared by NASA, was taken on March 19, 2025, when the sky was clear. The moon was emitting about 78 percent of its light compared to a full moon that night.
So, what exactly is Moonglint? It is the reflection of moonlight on the surface of water. It functions similarly to ‘Sunglint’ (sunshine reflection) during the day. When moonlight strikes the surface of the ocean or a large body of water and reflects back towards the astronaut at the same angle, it creates a bright and concentrated point of light known as Moonglint.
This phenomenon occurs only when the water’s surface is calm and the moon’s angle is just right. From space, it appears incredibly bright and alluring. In the captured image, Moonglint is concentrated over the Florida Keys and Cuba, beautifully reflecting the moonlight on the deep ocean waters. Major cities in Florida, such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Orlando, are illuminated in the picture.
The field of view in this image is nearly equivalent to that of the human eye, showcasing the curvature of the Earth and a subtle airglow on the horizon. Natural areas like Everglades National Park and Lake Okeechobee appear as deep dark patches in the image. Capturing Moonglint is rare for astronauts, as it requires the right timing, angle, and clear weather conditions.
