New Delhi, August 18: India will host the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting in New Delhi on August 18, 2026, under its presidency of BRICS. The meeting will focus on environmental cooperation, climate resilience, and sustainable development agendas.
The meeting will be chaired by Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Prior to this, there will be meetings of senior officials from the BRICS environmental working group and the contact group on climate change and sustainable development.
These discussions will take place under the overarching theme of India’s BRICS presidency for 2026, which is “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.” This meeting aims to provide a platform for BRICS member countries to exchange views on serious environmental challenges, build consensus, and strengthen practical cooperation.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India has identified key areas for focused participation under the BRICS environmental working group. These include promoting sustainable lifestyles, afforestation, forest fire management, disaster resilience, circular economy, and adaptation.
India’s emphasis on linking environmental protection with sustainable development and climate resilience is evident in these priorities. It is expected that these discussions will also enhance the exchange of policies, technologies, experiences, and best practices among BRICS nations.
This meeting, held under India’s BRICS presidency, holds significant importance. India aims to use this platform to enhance cooperation on issues related to developing economies. The agenda includes topics such as climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, resource efficiency, and disaster resilience.
Ministerial discussions are anticipated to advance ongoing dialogues among senior officials and working groups, strengthening the environmental agenda of BRICS during India’s 2026 presidency.
Earlier on Monday, India reported that the BRICS coalition has evolved into a rapidly influential platform, moving beyond economic dialogue to define its approach to serious environmental challenges, including rising pollution, biodiversity loss, and global warming.
The meeting of the BRICS environmental working group and senior officials, held at the India Mandapam, was chaired by Tanmay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Representatives from BRICS member countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), participated in the discussions.
