India to Conduct Its First Digital Census in 2027

New Delhi, April 25: India is set to conduct its first fully digital census in 2027. This groundbreaking initiative will collect data through mobile devices, ensuring accurate and detailed information that will aid in better policy formulation. An official fact sheet released on Saturday provided these insights.

The statement highlighted several new features for the upcoming census, including a Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal for near real-time monitoring, an option for self-reporting, and extensive use of geo-referenced areas.

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs decided to include caste enumeration in the 2027 census during its meeting on April 30, 2025. Prior to this, systematic counting was only conducted for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the 2011 census.

A budget of ₹11,718.24 crores has been allocated for this entire process, with robust measures in place for data security.

The 2027 census will be conducted in two phases to systematically and comprehensively gather data across the country. According to the government, this census will provide reliable information, making it easier to create targeted and inclusive policies with the help of secure data centers and a large workforce.

The statement further noted that the census aids in accurately understanding population trends, facilitating better planning in areas such as food, water, energy, and infrastructure. It also provides precise local information, ensuring government schemes reach the right places.

This will be the eighth census conducted since independence, offering more updated and detailed information than ever before. It will simplify planning according to changing social and economic conditions.

The census is a process of collecting, compiling, analyzing, and disseminating demographic, social, cultural, and economic data related to all individuals in the country or a specific area. The vast repository of information gathered through the census makes it the richest source of data for planners, administrators, researchers, and other data users. It serves as a crucial foundation for governance, enabling evidence-based decision-making in political, social, and economic spheres.

This will be the world’s largest census, and with digital technology, strong data security, and streamlined processes, it will further enhance data-driven policy-making.
