India to Center Global South in Energy Sector During BRICS 2026 Presidency: PM Modi

New Delhi, June 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that India will prioritize the Global South in creating a secure, robust, equitable, and sustainable global energy future during its BRICS (BRICS) presidency in 2026.

Sharing an article by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the social media platform X, PM Modi emphasized that a strong energy system is built not only through effective domestic policies but also through robust international partnerships.

He stated, “In the article by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who will lead India during the BRICS 2026 presidency, it is highlighted that India will work to position the Global South at the center of a secure, resilient, equitable, and sustainable global energy future.”

The Prime Minister noted that the article also mentions India’s belief that effective domestic policies, along with enhanced cooperation between countries, are essential for a strong energy system.

In his article, Minister Khattar pointed out that the global energy sector is undergoing rapid changes. In this context, mutual cooperation and innovation have become crucial for developing countries to achieve economic growth, energy security, and environmental balance.

He added that India aims to translate this shared vision into concrete outcomes during its BRICS presidency, focusing on enhancing cooperation among emerging economies in areas such as energy availability, clean energy transition, new technologies, and innovation.

Khattar highlighted that India has made significant progress in increasing electricity access, boosting non-fossil fuel-based power capacity, and expanding renewable energy.

He noted that India has already achieved over 50% of its total installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, ahead of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets.

The Union Minister stated that India is undertaking several important initiatives to strengthen energy security, including coal gasification, green hydrogen, electric mobility, and expanding the electricity transmission network.

He also mentioned that digital technologies like smart meters and the India Energy Stack are playing a vital role in modernizing the country’s electricity sector.

Khattar further remarked that the diverse strengths of BRICS countries complement each other. If these nations collaborate, they can develop a safe, robust, and sustainable energy system.

He concluded that through strong international partnerships, BRICS countries can play a significant role in advancing the interests of the Global South and developing long-term solutions in the energy sector.
