Indian Stock Market Closed for Muharram Observance

Mumbai, June 26: The Indian stock market will remain closed on Friday due to Muharram. Trading on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be completely halted for equities, equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), and currency derivatives.

In the commodities segment, trading will be suspended from 9 AM to 5 PM. However, trading will resume in the evening session from 5 PM until approximately 11:30/11:55 PM.

Following Muharram, the Indian stock market will reopen on June 29, coinciding with the weekend. There are no holidays scheduled in July and August, with the next market closure expected on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi.

Additionally, many banks across several states will also be closed due to Muharram. Affected states include Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka.

On the last trading day, the Sensex rose by 109.25 points, or 0.14%, closing at 77,100.47, while the Nifty increased by 34.35 points, also a 0.14% gain, finishing at 24,056.00.

Regional indices showed mixed results, with Nifty Auto leading the gains at 2.2%. Other sectors like Nifty FMCG, Nifty Realty, and Nifty Private Bank also saw modest increases, while Nifty Metal, Nifty IT, Nifty Media, Nifty Oil and Gas, Nifty Consumer Durables, and Nifty Pharma experienced declines.

Market experts noted that a significant drop in crude oil prices provided some support to the rupee, but it was insufficient to maintain the upward momentum.

Sector-wise, auto stocks performed well due to falling metal prices, easing supply chain issues, and improved retail demand during the month. Overall, market sentiment remained positive, although continued selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) could limit further gains.
