New Delhi, June 25: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal stated on Thursday that India’s remarkable growth story is shaped by resilience, a continuous learning spirit, and the determination to move forward despite setbacks.
Speaking at the India Global Forum during the UK-India Week 2026 in London, Goyal emphasized that such platforms provide excellent opportunities for individuals to learn from one another and strengthen partnerships.
Reflecting on his early academic life, Goyal recounted a significant setback he faced while studying Chartered Accountancy. Despite securing the second position in Law at Bombay University, he was disheartened by his disappointing marks in the Chartered Accountancy exam’s law section.
Dissatisfied with the results, Goyal traveled to Delhi to review his answer sheet and marks. He recalled spending an entire day with former Institute President K.G. Somani, who explained that exam scores or ranks do not determine a person’s future.
According to Goyal, Somani advised him that success in life is not solely defined by achieving the top rank in exams. He stated that the direction of one’s future is determined by personal efforts, learning capacity, and a forward-thinking mindset.
Goyal later realized that this failure was a crucial lesson that transformed his perspective on life and success. He noted that young people often place excessive importance on rankings and achievements. However, as time passes, life teaches us to embrace challenges and learn from them.
He added that life experiences, failures, and opportunities to meet people from diverse backgrounds play a vital role in personal development.
Using everyday examples, Goyal pointed out that some aspects of life cannot always be planned or controlled. He likened the difficulty of accurately predicting traffic conditions in cities like London and Bengaluru to the unpredictable nature of life itself.
The minister emphasized that experiences gained from friends, colleagues, and various events provide new insights and serve as sources of inspiration. He stressed that continuous learning and openness to others’ opinions and suggestions are essential for personal growth and national progress.
Piyush Goyal concluded by stating that the learning process never ends. Those individuals and nations that keep learning are the ones that advance and achieve new heights. He noted that India’s growth journey is based on this philosophy, where turning challenges into opportunities and learning from every experience is leading the country toward new successes.
