India Surpasses 300 GW in Non-Fossil Fuel Energy Capacity, Reports Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

Mumbai, August 27: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced on Thursday that India has exceeded 300 gigawatts (GW) of installed non-fossil fuel energy capacity, reaching approximately 302-303 GW. He highlighted that the Prime Minister‘s Surya Grah: Free Electricity Scheme has benefited around 5.35 million households. According to the minister, India’s non-fossil fuel capacity has surged from 80.3 GW to 300.5 GW over the past 12 years, marking a remarkable 275% increase. During this period, solar energy capacity skyrocketed from 2.8 GW to 165 GW, nearly a 58-fold increase, while wind energy capacity rose from about 21 GW to 58 GW, reflecting a 176% growth.

An official statement from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy revealed that India added over 17 GW of renewable energy capacity in the first four months of the fiscal year 2026-27, which includes 14.33 GW of solar capacity and over 2 GW of wind capacity.

Joshi emphasized that to achieve the target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, an investment of over ₹30 trillion will be required in the next five years. A significant portion of this capital must be raised through Indian financial institutions, capital markets, insurance funds, infrastructure investors, and private capital. This is why Mumbai is becoming a crucial hub for clean energy investment in India.

The Union Minister shared this information during a high-level gathering of investors, developers, financial institutions, industry leaders, and stakeholders at a roadshow for the upcoming India Renewable Energy Summit and Expo (BRESE) 2026.

The statement further noted that Joshi urged all stakeholders in the energy sector to participate in the upcoming BRESE 2026, which is generating considerable international interest. He stated that the four-day event is expected to attract heads of state and energy ministers from over 75 countries, along with more than 25,000 participants linked to global institutional investors and technology providers in the renewable energy value chain.

Joshi added that the summit will provide industry stakeholders with opportunities to forge partnerships, explore new markets, and connect with global investors and technology providers. He reiterated that India, as one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world, is attracting both domestic and foreign investments. With rapid infrastructure development across the country, the green energy sector presents significant opportunities for investment and collaboration.
