Pratapgarh, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : In Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, the tragic death of forest ranger Pratap Singh Chundawat has sparked widespread calls for him to be honored with martyr status. Chundawat was fatally injured while leading an operation against illegal mining activities in the area. His contributions to wildlife protection and rescue operations have been praised by representatives, forest officials, and social organizations alike.
Additional District Magistrate Vijayesh Pandya confirmed that the request for martyr status will be submitted to the government. Meanwhile, District Forest Officer Suresh Agarwal mentioned that the forest department will also send a formal proposal.
The loss is profoundly personal for Chundawat’s family. At 40, he was the sole breadwinner, leaving behind his wife, Asha Kunwar, a 13-year-old daughter, Gunjan, and an 8-year-old son, Anirudh. The family had recently lost Chundawat’s father, and now they face another devastating blow.
Chundawat had been stationed in Chhoti Sadri for nearly two years, actively involved in safeguarding forests and monitoring wildlife. He participated in rescue operations for tigers, leopards, pythons, and crocodiles. Colleagues recognized him as a skilled marksman and an excellent swimmer. His dedication earned him recognition, and he was nominated for a state-level award for his service.
His death occurred during a challenging assignment against illegal mining and the unlawful transportation of soil. On Monday night around 11:30 PM, Chundawat and his team received information about illegal activities and proceeded to the forest area near Ghat Wale Balaji in Chhoti Sadri.
Upon arrival, they discovered construction equipment and a truck loaded with soil. According to police reports, the truck driver accelerated suddenly, dragging Chundawat and his motorcycle for about 50 meters. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the incident, police intensified their investigation and began searching for the truck driver. Superintendent of Police Vishal Jangid stated that several individuals have been detained for questioning, and three police teams have been deployed to locate the suspect, conducting raids at various locations.
Authorities have seized the JCB and tractor found at the scene. Investigators are examining the roles of those allegedly involved in the illegal transportation of soil.
Member of Parliament C.P. Joshi has called for martyr status for Chundawat and strict action against those responsible. ADM Pandya reiterated that the request will be forwarded to the government. DFO Agarwal also confirmed that the forest department would formally propose this to the authorities. The incident has highlighted the challenges related to forest protection.
Pratapgarh boasts approximately 1,319 square kilometers of forest area, making the enforcement of regulations and security a significant responsibility for the forest department. This tragedy has also drawn attention to issues such as staffing shortages and vacant positions within the department.
