
Gandhinagar, May 18: India concluded the 2026 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championship with impressive results, securing third place in the women’s team ranking and fifth in the men’s category. The championship took place at the Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and featured top weightlifters from across Asia competing over six days.
Organized by the Indian Weightlifting Federation, the event ran from May 11 to 17, attracting 172 athletes from 30 countries, including 97 men and 75 women. The competition included eight bodyweight categories for women and seven for men, with over 20 countries represented in the women’s section and more than 15 in the men’s.
China dominated both the women’s and men’s team rankings. In the women’s category, China topped the standings with 578 points, followed by Chinese Taipei with 491 points, and India with 487 points. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Korea also made it to the top six. In the men’s team standings, China led with 593 points, followed by DPR Korea with 478 points and Uzbekistan with 409 points. Chinese Taipei secured fourth place with 392 points, while India finished fifth with 379 points, and Turkmenistan was sixth with 344 points.
Overall, China excelled in the medal tally, winning 21 gold, 12 silver, and 8 bronze medals. DPR Korea followed with 18 gold, 11 silver, and 1 bronze, while Chinese Taipei earned 3 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Bahrain, Iran, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Qatar, South Korea, India, Turkmenistan, Japan, Kazakhstan, and the Philippines also featured in the medal standings.
India achieved a total of 10 medals, including 1 silver and 9 bronze. The championship witnessed record-breaking performances, with 27 Asian records and 25 world records set. DPR Korea’s Ri Suk was named the best female lifter, while China’s Yuji was honored as the best male lifter.
On the final day, the women’s 86+ kilogram category took place, followed by a closing ceremony attended by officials from the Asian Weightlifting Federation, international representatives, athletes, coaches, and sports administrators. Ashwini Kumar, CEO of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, expressed pride in the high level of competition witnessed at the event.
He stated, “The successful hosting of the 2026 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championship in Gandhinagar is a moment of pride for Indian weightlifting and sports. The championship showcased excellent standards, numerous world and Asian records, and the participation of the continent’s best athletes.”
He further expressed gratitude to the international technical officials, volunteers, and the state government for their tremendous support in making the championship a success. Indian athletes displayed remarkable fighting spirit and delivered outstanding performances on home soil.
