
New Delhi: The 270th session of the Rajya Sabha has commenced, scheduled to hold a total of 30 sittings during this budget session. Central to the discussions will be the Union Budget 2026-27 along with critical legislative proposals presented by the Government. Parliamentary standing committees will also undertake detailed scrutiny of the demands for grants of various ministries and departments during the recess period, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairperson C.P. Radha Krishna informed on Thursday.
The Vice President appealed to all members of the Rajya Sabha to contribute meaningfully and effectively in both the house and committees. Following his remarks, the proceedings of the house were adjourned, with the next sitting scheduled for 11 am on 1 February 2026.
Earlier, the Chairperson highlighted that along with budget proposals, several significant bills would be introduced and debated extensively during the session. He emphasized the collective responsibility of members to make optimal and constructive use of the allotted time to realise the aspirations of the people.
Commending the members, Vice President Radha Krishna expressed satisfaction over India’s status as one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world. He stated that India is rapidly moving towards becoming the third largest economy globally.
Underlining the growing role and influence of India in the global economic landscape, he noted that the responsibility of parliamentarians becomes even more crucial because the Parliament plays a central role in shaping the nation’s economic direction. Referring to the President’s address to both Houses of Parliament, he mentioned that a clear outline of national priorities was presented, and accordingly, the Rajya Sabha would fulfill its legislative and deliberative duties.
He reiterated that the 270th session would comprise 30 meetings focused on in-depth discussions on the Union Budget 2026-27 and government legislative proposals. The Vice President urged all members to ensure strong parliamentary oversight and uphold the highest standards of decorum, discipline, and order.
Highlighting the importance of democracy being strengthened through diverse views and vibrant debate, Radha Krishna stressed that differences of opinion must be expressed respectfully and constructively. He expressed hope that this session would set an example of propriety, discipline, and dignified conduct. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he said, “A disciplined and enlightened democracy is the best form of government.” He added that the conduct of members in the house should reflect this discipline and enlightenment.
