Importance of Diet in Managing Ulcers: Insights from Ayurveda

New Delhi, 5 January. An ulcer is a sore that forms on the inner lining of the stomach, primarily due to poor diet, excessive acid production, stress, or long-term unhealthy lifestyles. It is essential to understand that merely relying on medication may not provide complete relief. A proper diet is crucial, as without it, even medications may not be fully effective.

When there is a sore in the stomach, consuming inappropriate food can exacerbate acid levels, leading to increased irritation and prolonging the healing process. On the other hand, if meals are light, plain, and timely, it can help soothe the stomach and expedite the healing of the ulcer. Therefore, individuals suffering from ulcers must pay special attention to their diet throughout the day.

It is advisable not to consume overly spicy or heavy foods immediately after waking up. Drinking lukewarm water is the best option, and if it suits one’s body, a little coconut water can be beneficial. It is wise to avoid the habit of drinking tea or coffee on an empty stomach, as it can be detrimental for those with ulcers.

For breakfast, opting for oatmeal is a safe and healthy choice. Additionally, oats or light khichdi can also be suitable. A slice of plain bread with a little ghee is acceptable, but spicy parathas or fried foods should be avoided. Fruits need to be chosen wisely; ripe bananas are beneficial for ulcers, while papaya provides cooling effects for the stomach. Eating peeled apples is preferable, whereas sour fruits like oranges, lemons, pineapples, and raw mangoes should be avoided as they can increase acid production.

For lunch, one can consume plain rice or chapati along with moong dal or arhar dal, which are light on the stomach. Vegetables like bottle gourd, zucchini, and ridge gourd are considered good for the digestive system. It’s important to steer clear of heavy meals, fried foods, pickles, and spicy dishes during this meal. Overeating can also be harmful.

If hunger strikes in the evening, roasted chickpeas or murmura can be good snacks. Herbal tea is suitable, but biscuits and snacks should be avoided. Drinking tea frequently during the day can be counterproductive, and coffee is considered unfavorable for ulcer patients.

Dinner should always be light. Khichdi or vegetable-cooked chapati is sufficient, and it is recommended to finish eating 2-3 hours before sleeping. Heavy, oily meals, late-night milk consumption, and lying down immediately after eating are significant mistakes for those dealing with ulcers.
