Tehran, February 22: Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday. The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced details of the conversation, which took place on Saturday evening.

According to the ministry, both parties discussed recent developments related to indirect talks between Iran and the United States.

Araghchi emphasized Iran’s constructive participation, stating that Iran is committed to using diplomacy to safeguard its legitimate rights in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and international law.

Grossi described the Geneva talks as “positive” and expressed the IAEA’s readiness to cooperate in developing the framework for these discussions. Both officials underscored the importance of constructive engagement and dialogue to reach a sustainable agreement.

This marks the second phone call between the two in a week. They had previously discussed the outcomes of the Geneva talks and the negotiation framework on Wednesday. Iran indicated that the next step is to finalize a draft proposal to be presented to U.S. representative Steve Biegun, with serious negotiations potentially commencing within a week. According to Mehr News, they also deliberated on regional developments, emphasizing the need for a fair agreement.

On February 16, Araghchi met with Grossi ahead of the second round of indirect talks with the U.S. Iran had engaged in significant diplomatic discussions just before the upcoming nuclear talks. The Iranian delegation held crucial meetings with officials from the IAEA in Geneva, aimed at strategic preparation and clarifying their stance before negotiations with the United States. This move has sparked new discussions and speculation internationally.

After the meeting, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on social media platform X, stating, “I am in Geneva with a real idea to make a fair and equal deal.” Iran is prepared to negotiate for relief from sanctions.

It is noteworthy that Oman is attempting to mediate between the U.S. and Iran. The first round of discussions took place in Muscat, the capital of Oman, followed by meetings in Geneva, Switzerland.

Following these talks, Araghchi remarked that the discussions were positive. He noted that there was “very good dialogue in Geneva” between Iran and the U.S., addressing issues related to Iran’s nuclear program and U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

However, subsequent statements from the U.S. raised questions about the success of the talks. On February 19, during a meeting of the Board of Peace, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he was giving Iran a 10-day deadline.
