Murshidabad, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The political climate in Murshidabad, West Bengal, has intensified following the announcement of a by-election for the Rejinagar Assembly seat. Humayun Kabir, the president of the Aam Janata Party (AJP) and the current MLA for Rejinagar, has accused the police administration of acting with bias and attempting to undermine the democratic process. He announced plans to file a writ petition in the High Court on Wednesday.
Responding to a recent arrest, Kabir acknowledged the police’s right to act against those violating the law. However, he claimed that since the by-election was declared, the administration and police have been targeting him and his party’s supporters. He noted that only his supporters in the Sagarpara, Rejinagar, and Beldanga police station areas face action, while no measures have been taken against members of other political parties.
Kabir criticized the district’s Superintendent of Police, alleging that they are not acting impartially. He contended that the police’s actions align with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) agenda, using state power to exert pressure on citizens.
He emphasized that all political parties and candidates should have the equal right to campaign and contest elections peacefully. Kabir aims to communicate this message to the Election Commission and all political parties in the country.
Additionally, he plans to approach the High Court on Wednesday to submit his writ petition, asserting that participating in elections, campaigning, and voting are constitutional rights for all citizens. He pointed to the recent by-election in Bankipur, Bihar, where a senior BJP leader and former MLA lost, questioning why the BJP would lose if elections could be won through administrative machinery.
Kabir stressed that elections must be free and fair, and no party should benefit from administrative pressure.
