Newtown, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : State minister and former West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar expressed strong confidence on Tuesday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will secure victories in the upcoming by-elections for the Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly seats on October 6.
This optimism follows the BJP’s announcement of its candidates for these constituencies, naming Hasirani Rath and Sakharav Sarkar as their representatives. Hasirani Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, a former personal assistant to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while Sakharav Sarkar is a former district president of the BJP in Murshidabad and a member of the party’s state committee.
Majumdar stated that the BJP candidates are poised for victory, especially since the Left parties have fielded two candidates in Rejinagar. He anticipates that candidates from CPI-M and Congress will also enter the fray, with the Trinamool Congress likely to nominate one or two candidates as well. He believes that the political landscape will ultimately reflect BJP’s presence.
Responding to the ongoing investigation by the Bengal CID at the residence of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, Majumdar remarked that while it is difficult to predict election outcomes, the investigation will proceed based on the information provided by the accused.
He noted, “I cannot predict what will happen next, as I am not an astrologer. However, it has come to our attention through the media that Sumit Roy, Abhishek Banerjee’s personal assistant, has informed the West Bengal police or CID about who instructed him to perform certain tasks.”
Majumdar added that based on Roy’s statements, the police will conduct searches for relevant documents. He emphasized that if evidence against Banerjee is found, it could lead to serious consequences for him.
Discussing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Majumdar confirmed that it will be implemented in West Bengal. He referenced recent comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, indicating that orders have been issued. The BJP government is actively working on this initiative, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari having already formed a committee to engage with various stakeholders.
Majumdar stressed the importance of UCC in ensuring equal treatment for all citizens, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. He pointed out that the fundamental principle of the Constitution prohibits discrimination based on these factors, and he believes it is crucial to eliminate such disparities as quickly as possible.
