New Delhi, June 8: In a remarkable display during the only Test match between India and Afghanistan, the opening pair of Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik made history. They set a record for the highest partnership for Afghanistan against India in Test cricket.
After being bowled out for 152 runs in their first innings, Afghanistan was forced to follow on. In their second innings, Atal and Abdul opened the batting, focusing on stability and building a solid foundation.
Together, they added 42 runs for the first wicket, marking the largest partnership for any wicket against India. However, Abdul struggled with the bat, scoring only 8 runs off 40 balls before getting out.
In the first innings, Afghanistan’s batting lineup faced significant challenges, with five players failing to reach double digits. Rahmat Shah stood out, battling through the innings to score 60 runs off 135 balls, including nine fours and a six. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi contributed 20 runs, while Atal managed 17 runs. Ultimately, the entire Afghan team was dismissed for just 152 runs.
India’s bowling attack was led by debutant spinner Manav Suthar, who showcased his skills by taking 6 wickets for 33 runs in 22 overs. This performance marked the second-best bowling spell by an Indian in a debut Test. He became only the second Indian bowler in 35 years to take 6 wickets on debut.
Prasidh Krishna also made an impact, claiming 3 wickets. Based on their first innings performance, India established a massive lead of 412 runs. The Indian team declared their first innings at 564 runs, losing 8 wickets, thanks to stellar centuries from KL Rahul (100 runs) and Shubman Gill (126 runs).
