Glasgow, July 28: Indian boxer Priya has made a remarkable entry into the semifinals of the women’s 60 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. She secured her spot by defeating Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell with a score of 4-1 in the quarterfinals. This victory, alongside her fellow boxer Preeti, guarantees India at least one medal. Priya will compete in the semifinals on July 31.
Despite losing the first round on four out of five judges’ scorecards, Priya displayed incredible composure. She made a strong comeback, dominating the second and third rounds with quick combinations, effective counter-attacks, and superior control in the ring. Four judges scored the match 28-27 in her favor, while the fifth judge awarded her a 29-26 score, confirming her impressive 4-1 victory.
With this win, Priya has reached the semifinals and is just one victory away from a chance at the gold medal. According to the Commonwealth Games boxing rules, reaching the semifinals ensures at least a bronze medal.
Earlier, fellow boxer Preeti secured her place in the semifinals of the women’s 54 kg category with a unanimous decision victory over Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde, thus guaranteeing a bronze medal for herself.
In the quarterfinal match held at SEC Hall 5, Preeti dominated each round, achieving a significant 5-0 win based on points. She kept her opponent on the back foot, winning all three rounds on the scorecards of all five judges.
The judges’ scores reflected her dominance, with results of 30-25, 30-25, 30-26, 30-26, and 30-27. During the match, Clyde fell three times. This victory came after Preeti’s impressive performance in the Round of 16, where she advanced following a referee stoppage against Malawi’s Mtengze in the second round.
