Hambantota, July 29: The Sri Lankan women’s cricket team triumphed over Pakistan, winning the three-match ODI series 2-1. The decisive match took place on Tuesday at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, where the hosts secured a commanding 8-wicket victory.
Earlier in the series, Pakistan claimed the first match by 5 wickets. However, Sri Lanka bounced back to win the second match, setting the stage for a thrilling final encounter.
In the third ODI, Pakistan lost the toss and opted to bat first, managing only 187 runs in 40 overs. The team struggled early, losing three wickets for just 10 runs, all dismissed in the second over by Shehana Seneviratne.
Despite the early setbacks, Muniba Ali and Gul Firoza attempted to stabilize the innings with a partnership of 68 runs for the fourth wicket. Gul Firoza scored 40 runs off 35 balls before getting out, while Muniba Ali contributed 34 runs. Additionally, Nazia Alvi added 30 runs, and captain Sana Fatima chipped in with 41 runs. For Sri Lanka, Shehana, Kashvi Dilhari, and Chamari Athapaththu each took three wickets, while Ranvira claimed one.
In response, the Sri Lankan team chased down the target in 37.2 overs. Vishmi Gunaratne and captain Athapaththu set the tone with a 46-run opening partnership. Vishmi scored 12 runs before returning to the pavilion, but Athapaththu continued to build momentum, adding 39 runs with Harshitha Samarawickrama for the second wicket. Athapaththu played a brilliant innings of 52 runs, featuring 2 sixes and 7 fours.
Harshitha then formed an unbeaten partnership of 106 runs with Hasini Perera for the third wicket, leading the team to a comfortable victory. Harshitha finished with 71 runs off 92 balls, hitting 11 fours, while Hasini scored an unbeaten 50 runs off 77 balls with 8 fours. For Pakistan, Fatima Sana and Umm-e-Hani each took one wicket.
