Glasgow, July 28: In a remarkable display of skill, boxer Preeti has secured a place in the semifinals of the women’s 54 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Competing in Glasgow, she achieved a decisive victory over Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde, ensuring at least a bronze medal for India.
Preeti dominated the quarterfinal match held at SEC Hall 5, winning every round with a unanimous score of 5-0. From the outset, she showcased her superior speed, accuracy, and control in the ring, keeping her opponent on the defensive. All five judges awarded her the victory in each round, leaving no doubt about the outcome.
The scoreboard reflected her dominance clearly, with judges scoring the match 30-25, 30-26, and 30-27 in her favor. Clyde faced three knockdowns during the bout, further emphasizing Preeti’s control.
This victory follows her impressive performance in the Round of 16, where she advanced after the referee stopped her match against Malawi’s Mtengze in the second round. Preeti will now compete in the semifinals on July 31, aiming for a spot in the gold medal match. Notably, both losing semifinalists in Commonwealth boxing receive bronze medals, securing Preeti’s place on the podium.
Earlier on Monday, India’s Ankush also made headlines by winning his quarterfinal match in the men’s 80 kg category, bringing him one step closer to a medal. His teammate Sachin also advanced to the quarterfinals in the men’s 60 kg event with an impressive victory.
Ankush, who previously won a silver medal at the World Boxing Cup finals, showcased his talent by defeating Antigua and Barbuda’s Jalan with a 5-0 score in the Round of 16. He maintained control throughout the match, winning all three rounds and earning perfect scores of 10-10 from all five judges. This victory propelled him into the quarterfinals, while Sachin secured his spot by defeating England’s William Hewitt with a split decision of 4-1.
