New Delhi, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhu met with Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Wednesday to discuss strengthening science and technology initiatives in the state, particularly in remote and tribal areas.
During the meeting, Sukhu presented a proposal to establish an astronomy and astrophysics center in high-altitude tribal regions such as Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi. He suggested that this center could be modeled after successful astronomical projects in Hanle, Ladakh.
Sukhu emphasized that the geographical and natural conditions of the region are highly conducive to astronomical research and observation. He believes this initiative would spark interest in science among local youth and students, while also promoting knowledge-based and sustainable tourism in tribal areas.
The Chief Minister also discussed measures to promote lavender cultivation in the state. He requested collaboration through the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to expand demonstration centers, which would educate farmers about effective lavender farming techniques. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the crop and encourage farmers to adopt it as a profitable alternative.
To further cultivate interest in science and technology among students, Sukhu sought assistance for establishing science museums in schools located in aspirational blocks of Himachal Pradesh. He noted that these museums would enhance scientific curiosity, provide hands-on learning opportunities, and foster interest in science, technology, and innovation.
Additionally, the Chief Minister stressed the need to strengthen the local weather monitoring network. He urged the central government to expedite plans for installing automatic rain gauges in every gram panchayat and automatic weather stations at the block level. This initiative aims to provide accurate and real-time weather information at the panchayat and block levels, thereby enhancing scientific weather monitoring and enabling farmers to make informed decisions based on localized weather data.
