Shimla, 24 August (Kiran News). The Himachal Pradesh government has taken a significant step to provide employment to youth and strengthen the Animal Husbandry Department. Now, multi-task workers in the state will be designated as “Pashu Mitra” (Animal Friends). The government has implemented the “Pashu Mitra Policy-2025.” This job will be completely temporary and will not be considered a basis for permanent appointment in the future.

According to the government notification, local youth will be appointed as Pashu Mitra in veterinary hospitals, dispensaries, polyclinics, sheep and goat shelters, cowsheds, poultry farms, and laboratories across the state. Each Pashu Mitra will receive a monthly honorarium of ₹5,000 and will be required to work only four hours daily.
Applicants must be permanent residents of Himachal Pradesh, aged between 18 and 45 years, and have at least passed Class 10. Preference will be given to candidates of good character, physically fit, and having knowledge related to animal husbandry.
Mandatory: Running 100 Meters Carrying 25 Kg
Selection will take place in two phases. In the first phase, candidates will have to undergo a physical test, which involves running 100 meters carrying 25 kg of weight within one minute. This test is necessary as Pashu Mitras will be expected to handle and restrain large animals, lift sick or newborn animals, dispose of dead animals, and carry heavy fodder bags or liquid nitrogen containers. Candidates who pass the physical test will be called for counselling based on merit. The selection committee at the sub-divisional level will be chaired by the SDM.
The notification further states that the work of Pashu Mitras will include handling animals, assisting in treatment and vaccination, delivering fodder and water, maintaining medicines and equipment, cleaning hospitals and farms, and disposing of dead animals.
Pashu Mitras will receive 12 days of annual leave, Sundays, and gazetted holidays. Women employees are eligible for 180 days of maternity leave for up to two children and 45 days’ leave in case of miscarriage. If absent for seven consecutive days without permission, the service will be automatically terminated. Employees may leave the job by giving one month’s notice. The department may also terminate the service due to indiscipline, unsatisfactory work, or health reasons.
Recently, the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu approved the recruitment of 500 Pashu Mitras.
