New Delhi, May 28: Retired Supreme Court Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar, appointed to lead the ‘High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes,’ stated on Wednesday that the committee will explore potential laws for the deportation of illegal immigrants.
Justice Naolekar emphasized, “The committee will make recommendations. The report will be submitted to the government, which will decide how much of it to implement.”
He clarified that the committee’s role is solely to advise the government. “The government will create laws after they are passed by Parliament,” he added.
The committee will assess demographic changes and illegal immigration. “This will be our area of focus,” he noted.
He stressed that the committee will study demographic changes in border districts, cities, and tribal areas. However, he mentioned that the committee will consider the population demographics of the entire country, not just specific regions.
“After that, we will identify the causes of demographic changes,” he said.
Additionally, he stated, “We will suggest a proper system for the detention and deportation of illegal immigrants. We will consider what types of laws should be created for their deportation.”
Naolekar further mentioned that the committee can seek information from any ministry, state government, or agency. “The committee must present its final report within a year. Importantly, if the report is not submitted within six months, it can be extended by another six months,” he explained.
He confirmed that the committee’s headquarters will be located in New Delhi.
Regarding the committee’s composition, he noted, “Currently, there are seven members in the committee.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the formation of the ‘High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes’ on Tuesday to address challenges posed by illegal immigration that leads to unnatural demographic shifts in the country.
