High-Density Apple Harvest Begins in Pulwama, Farmers Optimistic About Bumper Crop

Mumbai, August 2: The apple season has commenced in the valley, with high-density apple harvesting starting in Pulwama district. Farmers are delighted with the bumper yield. Additionally, orchardists and the agriculture department have urged producers and fruit agents not to harvest immature fruit in pursuit of quick profits. Waiting for the right size and color of the apples will ensure better prices.

In an interview with a news agency, an apple farmer stated, “There are numerous advantages to cultivating high-density apples compared to traditional orchards. In our region, traditional apple trees take 10 to 15 years to bear fruit, while high-density varieties, especially the Italian Gala, produce fruit much sooner. The color develops quickly, and they reach the market earlier, benefiting farmers. This year, the harvest is also bumper. Now we just hope for good rates in the market.”

The farmer added that high-density orchards yield more per acre and are easier to maintain. With drip irrigation and modern techniques, production has increased, but maintaining quality remains crucial.

Riyaz Ahmed Shah, the chief horticulture officer, shared, “The harvesting of high-density apples has begun in Pulwama. Our crops, whether high-density or traditional, have their own timelines. There is a gap from flowering to harvesting. While there can be slight variations, there is an average timeframe.”

He further explained, “There are several indicators that tell us whether the fruit is ready for harvest. We look at color, size, sweetness, and the ability to detach from the stem. I urge orchardists to wait a little longer. If the apples are fully ripe and the right size and color, not only will the quality improve, but they will also fetch better prices in the markets. Early harvesting can disrupt the market and lead to losses for farmers.”

According to the agriculture department, this year has seen an increase in the area under high-density apple cultivation in Pulwama. With government schemes providing subsidies for plants and technical assistance, young farmers are also being attracted to this venture.
