Controversy Surrounds Taslima Nasrins Acceptance Among Muslims, Says Maulana Sajid Rashidi

New Delhi, August 2: Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin praised the Indian government’s commitment to freedom of expression. Following her remarks, Maulana Sajid Rashidi, president of the All India Imam Association, claimed that Muslims have never accepted Nasrin.

In Kolkata, Nasrin noted that her treatment has varied under different governments, but the current administration has allowed her to visit India. She also expressed concern over alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, emphasizing education as the key solution.

In response to Nasrin’s statements, Rashidi remarked that she has always been a controversial figure. Due to her comments about Prophet Muhammad and other religious matters, she has had to live outside her home country. He questioned why, if she believes the Yunus government has failed, she does not return to Bangladesh to effect change. Rashidi stated that Nasrin has not improved herself and that Muslims have never accepted her. He urged Prime Minister Modi to prevent her from residing in India, claiming her presence has hurt Muslim sentiments. He labeled her a highly controversial writer whose words should not be taken seriously.

Congress MP Tariq Anwar stated that Rashidi’s comments reflect his personal opinion. He highlighted that educational institutions, whether madrasas, schools, or Sanskrit schools, strive to provide education to children, but the government lacks the resources to educate all children in the country.

Former TMC spokesperson Riju Dutta pointed out that opposition parties often accuse the BJP of being anti-secular and disrespectful towards other religions. However, Nasrin’s visit to West Bengal contradicts this narrative, as the BJP government welcomed her with respect. Dutta questioned what greater example of secularism could exist, noting that the TMC had barred her from visiting for 15 years, while CM Suvendu Adhikari welcomed her.

Congress MP Mohammad Javed emphasized that there are numerous issues within the country that require discussion and resolution before focusing on external matters.
