New Delhi, August 2: Independent MP Pappu Yadav from Purnia made headlines on Sunday after an incident during a press conference at his residence in Delhi, where he was allegedly targeted with a sandal. Following the incident, Yadav and his associates claimed there was an attempt to stab him as well.
In a conversation post-incident, Yadav stated that if it weren’t for the people present, he would have certainly died. He accused that his children were harassed throughout the night.
Yadav emphasized that leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Akhilesh Yadav are continuously fighting for issues that resonate with millions of citizens. They are questioning the protection of Sanatan values and the alleged embezzlement of temple donations. Some individuals have openly threatened his life.
He remarked, “I know that no saint harms anyone, curses, or talks about burning someone alive. We express our views in Parliament democratically. We always adhere to decorum and never cross the line. Our opposition remains within democratic and constitutional limits.”
Zaid Khan, Yadav’s media convenor, alleged that during the press conference, one person attempted to throw a sandal at the MP from behind, while another reportedly tried to stab him. He indicated that the assailants seemed to be aiming for an incident reminiscent of ‘Atiq Ahmed Part-2.’
Khan also made serious allegations against the Delhi police, stating that a written complaint regarding the MP’s security was submitted three to four days prior, highlighting ongoing protests against him. Despite this, adequate security measures were not implemented. He claimed that even after the incident, the police did not take immediate action against the attackers.
Khan accused the Delhi government and police of being indifferent to Yadav’s safety, stating that the police acted as mere spectators during the entire incident. Eyewitness Akhtar Khan recounted that as the press conference began, one individual used foul language and then threw a sandal at the MP. Some of the assailants were reportedly armed with knives. Such an incident occurring at the residence of a democratically elected MP is extremely unfortunate and alarming for democracy.
Congress leader Udit Raj commented that he witnessed the knife attack on television and called for a fair investigation into the matter, insisting that Yadav should be provided adequate security. According to police sources, one of the accused is identified as Sumit Sahapani, son of Phool Giri, hailing from Sahapani village in Bulandshahr. Another individual named Happy was reportedly present in a Creta vehicle outside Yadav’s residence.
Police sources revealed that during interrogation, it was disclosed that both individuals had come from Bulandshahr to Delhi to repair their vehicle. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether they brought the knives with them.
