
Srinagar witnessed heavy snowfall leading to the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on January 23 due to snow accumulation near the Navayug Tunnel. However, the highway has now been reopened for traffic, and stranded vehicles are being allowed to move out in an orderly manner. Efforts are underway to clear snow from Srinagar International Airport to resume normal operations.
Airport authorities confirmed that flight operations have restarted at Srinagar International Airport. Except for three flights cancelled on Sunday due to pilot issues in Delhi, regular flight activities have resumed smoothly.
Traffic officials have cautioned that the Srinagar-Leh Highway, Mughal Road, and roads passing through Sinthan and Razdan passes remain closed. Travellers are advised not to use these routes without contacting the traffic department control room.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in parts of the Union Territory from January 26 to 27, with some areas expecting heavy rain or snow accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. In view of the weather predictions, farmers have been advised to halt agricultural activities until January 28. Residents in snow-covered and avalanche-prone hilly areas are also urged to avoid risky zones.
Current temperatures recorded include minus 1.6°C in Srinagar, minus 10.2°C in Gulmarg, and minus 6.2°C in Pahalgam. Jammu registered a minimum of 7.1°C, Katra 6.2°C, Batote minus 0.1°C, Banihal minus 2°C, and Bhaderwah minus 4°C.
After a prolonged dry spell, the recent snowfall has brought relief to farmers, orchardists, and residents, ensuring adequate water supply in rivers, springs, wells, and lakes during the summer months. The first snowfall of the season in the valley’s plains occurred on January 23. The harsh winter period, locally known as ‘Chilla Kalan,’ began on December 21 and is expected to end by January 30.
