Mumbai, 16 August (Kiran News). Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has caused rivers and streams to overflow in several districts of Maharashtra. Due to flooding in Solapur, many villages have been cut off as of Saturday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri till 21 August.
The Maharashtra Disaster Management Department reported on Saturday that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the next five days. The torrential rain that began yesterday has created havoc in Solapur, with several villages in South Solapur losing connectivity. The district administration has appealed to residents in low-lying areas to move to safer locations. Additionally, a landslide at Chadsailli Ghat in Satpura has disrupted traffic.
In Jalna district’s Badnapur tehsil and Gevrai area, heavy rain since Saturday morning has turned fields into lakes and roads are overflowing. Kharif crops like cotton and soybean are completely submerged, raising fears of significant financial losses for farmers.
Washim district saw renewed heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon, with intense rain for over an hour across the district. In Kinkheda area of Washim taluka, downpour resembling a cloudburst led to water entering several homes, causing inconvenience and damage to household goods. Flooding in rivers and streams has inundated riverside fields, threatening major damage to crops like soybean, cotton, moong, and urad. The administration has already warned citizens and farmers to stay alert due to the heavy rainfall forecast. The Manjara dam, supplying water to Latur and Beed Dharashiv districts, is now 90% full. In response to rising inflow, four out of eighteen gates of the dam have been opened, releasing water into the Manjara river basin and raising water levels. Warnings have been issued to villages along the riverbanks.
In Hingoli’s Kalamnuri city, commercial shops have been flooded. In Nanded district, the rainfall has caused severe disruptions, with Kinwat tehsil’s Ganeshpur village submerged and residents complaining that the administration has not reached them yet.
Heavy rainfall continued in Nanded district through the night, intensifying on Saturday morning and wreaking havoc in Himayatnagar of Kinwat tehsil. Many rivers and streams in this region are in spate.
Mumbai has also been badly affected by the rains. On Friday night, a landslide in the Parksite area of Vikhroli claimed two lives and injured two others, who are currently being treated at Rajawadi Hospital. By Saturday evening, several areas of Mumbai were waterlogged, and the municipal corporation was engaged in drainage operations.
