Heavy Rainfall Expected in Tamil Nadu Until May 19

Chennai, May 14: A distinct low-pressure area over the southwestern Bay of Bengal and adjacent central Bay of Bengal is likely to bring widespread rainfall to Tamil Nadu in the coming days. The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast scattered heavy rain in several western and hilly districts until May 19.

Meteorologists indicate that this weather system has strengthened the atmospheric conditions favorable for rainfall activities across the state. Particularly, the Western Ghats, delta regions, and coastal districts are experiencing rapidly changing atmospheric conditions.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has also noted that conditions are becoming favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance into parts of the southern Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16, signaling the gradual onset of the monsoon season.

Officials report that thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall are expected in various parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days. The western districts and hilly areas are anticipated to receive the most rainfall due to the influence of moist winds associated with the low-pressure system.

Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for the Nilgiri district on May 14, 15, and 17. Additionally, heavy rain is likely in the hilly regions of Coimbatore district on May 15, while Theni district is expected to experience heavy rainfall on May 16.

Weather officials have advised residents in sensitive and hilly areas to remain vigilant, especially in regions prone to flooding and landslides. Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are also expected in the delta districts on Thursday, providing some relief from the recent hot and humid weather.

Meanwhile, a significant drop in temperature has been recorded in Tamil Nadu over the past 24 hours, with maximum temperatures decreasing by about 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in some areas. This temperature decline has offered temporary relief to those enduring above-normal heat in recent weeks.

In Chennai, the RMC predicts partly cloudy skies and light rain over the next two days. The daytime temperature in the city is expected to range between 35 to 36 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels may remain high.
