Chennai, July 2: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in parts of western Tamil Nadu over the next two days. This weather pattern is influenced by a low-pressure area extending from southern Gujarat to Karnataka, which is expected to bring significant rainfall to Coimbatore and Nilgiri.
According to the latest weather bulletin from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, an increase in rainfall activity is anticipated across several districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry due to the current weather system.
The IMD forecasts that on Thursday, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds may occur in one or two locations within these areas.
The department has warned that heavy rainfall is likely in Coimbatore district, as well as in the hilly regions of Nilgiri and Theni, on Friday.
There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats, where a combination of moist westerly winds and the existing weather system could lead to intense downpours.
Unstable weather conditions are expected to persist on Saturday, with the IMD predicting heavy rainfall in some areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiri, and Kanyakumari districts.
Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas are advised to remain alert. Those living in potential landslide-prone hilly regions are urged to follow official guidance and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
Authorities are expected to closely monitor the situation in affected districts, particularly in hilly areas and surrounding catchment regions, where heavy rainfall could cause flooding, minor landslides, and disruptions to daily life.
The meteorological department also indicated that thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds may occur in various locations across Tamil Nadu during the forecast period.
People are advised to take necessary precautions during storms, avoid seeking shelter under trees, and stay indoors as much as possible.
Meanwhile, Chennai is likely to experience partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall in some areas. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to remain below 37 degrees Celsius, providing some relief from the recent oppressive heat and humidity.
The weather department stated that it will continue to monitor the changing weather conditions and will provide further updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about official forecasts and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
