Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chennai has forecasted heavy rainfall in nine districts of Tamil Nadu and has advised residents to stay cautious as the weather is expected to remain adverse for the next two days.
According to an official statement from the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, the eastern winds over the southwest Bay of Bengal are the primary cause of the ongoing rainfall. This system is likely to bring rain to many parts of Tamil Nadu for at least two days.
The department has issued a special warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall during the daytime in Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, and Namakkal districts. Additionally, Kuddalore, Thanjavur, and Ramanathapuram districts are expected to experience intense rain during the day.
Officials have indicated the possibility of thunder and lightning accompanying the rain in some areas, increasing the risk of local flooding, waterlogging in low-lying places, and disruptions in road traffic.
Farmers and residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to take precautionary measures and follow government advisories carefully.
For Chennai and surrounding regions, the meteorological department predicts light rain with occasional thunder and lightning throughout the day. Although large-scale flooding is not anticipated, intermittent rainfall may cause temporary inconvenience.
The weather department has further predicted that light rain will continue across Tamil Nadu on Monday, with some inland areas likely to see a gradual decrease in rainfall intensity. No fog conditions are expected anywhere in the state during this period.
Despite the rain, the absence of fog and clouds in the mornings is expected to raise nighttime temperatures. The weather office estimates that minimum temperatures in Tamil Nadu could rise up to 3 degrees Celsius above normal, making nights relatively warmer.
Officials have also advised fishermen to regularly monitor weather bulletins, as sea conditions may remain rough in parts of the Bay of Bengal. The public is encouraged to stay alert and comply with safety instructions issued by local authorities in case of any changes in weather conditions.
