Mumbai, June 24: Heavy monsoon rains have lashed Mumbai and its surrounding areas in the past few hours, leading to significant waterlogging in various parts of the city and disrupting daily life. Over 300 mm of rainfall was recorded in several areas, prompting municipal authorities to take action to address the flooding and ensure essential services remain operational.
According to rainfall data from the last 24 hours, Colaba recorded 248 mm of rain, while Santa Cruz saw 225 mm. Among the most affected areas, Malvani experienced approximately 340 mm of rainfall, and parts of Parel recorded around 334 mm.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated its emergency response system, deploying over 7,000 officers and staff across various locations to manage the situation and assist in emergencies.
Despite the continuous rain leading to water accumulation in many low-lying areas, the BMC has activated its dewatering pumps, stormwater pumping stations, and flood-control systems. This has allowed for the rapid drainage of accumulated water, helping to maintain traffic flow on major roads despite the heavy downpour.
The BMC’s Disaster Management Department is closely monitoring vulnerable areas, including low-lying regions, railway stations, main roads, bridges, and coastal zones. Engineers, field staff, and control room personnel from various departments are working around the clock to address public complaints and emergencies.
Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has urged residents to heed the advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and to contact the BMC control room immediately in case of emergencies. She stated that all municipal departments have been put on high alert due to forecasts of continued heavy rainfall. The civic administration is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
The impact of the heavy rain is not limited to Mumbai alone. Several parts of Maharashtra, particularly Vasai-Virar and Nalasopara, have also experienced severe waterlogging, causing disruptions to daily life and transportation. In Nalasopara, persistent rainfall has submerged several roads and low-lying areas. After hours of heavy rain, the road leading to Alliance Hospital was completely inundated, making travel extremely difficult for residents and commuters.
Additionally, around nine trees have fallen across various parts of the city due to the heavy rain. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or serious injuries from these incidents.
Several incidents related to the rain also occurred in Mumbai. In Dadar East, a large tree fell on a parked car due to strong winds and heavy rain. Fire brigade teams, BMC officials, and other emergency personnel were dispatched promptly for rescue and cleanup efforts.
Officials have stated that additional services can be initiated on short notice if needed. Besides managing the passenger crowd during peak hours, metro officials are also prepared to increase services throughout the day based on passenger demand and weather conditions.
