weather update

Kolkata, 22 August (Kiran News): The rainy season in Bengal shows no sign of slowing down. Due to a low-pressure area formed over the region, heavy rainfall and stormy winds have continued since Thursday. Waterlogging and traffic disruptions have affected daily life in Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal. The influence of a cyclonic system over Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha is causing continuous rain. As the monsoon axis shifts northward, moisture is rapidly entering the state, expanding the area of rainfall. Rainfall and strong winds are expected to intensify on Friday and Saturday, with wind speeds reaching 30 to 40 kilometres per hour.

weather update

Since Friday morning, Kolkata’s sky has remained covered with dense clouds, with light to moderate rain expected throughout the day. On Friday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 28.4°C and the minimum at 26.2°C, both considerably below normal. According to weather experts, persistent rain may cause waterlogging in low-lying areas of Kolkata and surrounding regions.

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in 11 districts of the state. These include Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura. Orange alert has been issued for Bankura, Purulia, and West Midnapore. There is also a forecast of thunderstorms with rain in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Bardhaman, Nadia, Murshidabad, and Birbhum.

In North Bengal, districts such as Malda, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, North and South Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar have been warned of thunderstorms with rain and winds at speeds of 30 to 40 km per hour. Heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 centimetres is expected in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri. This increases the risk of rising water levels in rivers such as Teesta, Torsa, and Jaldhaka, and the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas of North Bengal. Landslides are also a concern in the hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

The sea conditions in the Bay of North Bengal and coastal areas of West Bengal are extremely rough. As a result, fishermen have been prohibited from venturing into deep sea areas.
