Heavy Rain

Bhopal, 16 August (Kiran News) – The monsoon has made a strong comeback in the second half of August across Madhya Pradesh. Due to the monsoon trough passing through the centre of the state, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, and active cyclonic systems in the upper air, continuous rainfall is being recorded in many regions. The weather department has issued a warning for extremely heavy rain in Betul and Burhanpur districts on Saturday. Additionally, 13 other districts are also likely to experience heavy rainfall. The department estimates that by 18 August, many districts will reach their seasonal rainfall quota.

Heavy Rain

Maximum Impact in Betul and Burhanpur in Next 24 Hours

According to the weather department, Betul and Burhanpur districts could be most affected in the next 24 hours, with up to 8 inches of rain expected. Jhabua, Alirajpur, Barwani, Dhar, Khargone, Dewas, Khandwa, Harda, Narmadapuram, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, and Balaghat may receive up to 4 inches of rain. An orange alert has been issued for these districts.

Weather scientist Devesh Singh informed that heavy rain, along with lightning, is expected to continue in Narmadapuram, Harda, Southern Sehore, Neemuch, Mandsaur-Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, Anuppur-Amarkantak, Mandla-Kanha, Dindori, and Balaghat. Meanwhile, moderate rain with lightning is likely to continue in Pachmarhi, Northern Sehore, Ujjain-Mahakaleshwar, Agar, Sagar, Shahdol, Seoni, Chhindwara, Betul, Pandhurna-Pench, and Dhar-Mandu. Light rain with thunder may occur in Indore-AP, Dewas, Jhabua, Khandwa-Omkareshwar, Umaria, Jabalpur-Bhedaghat, Rajgarh, Ratlam-Dholawad, and around midnight in Singrauli, Katni, Damoh, Raisen-Sanchi-Bhimbetka, Narsinghpur, Burhanpur, Khargone-Maheshwar, Barwani-Bawangaja, Alirajpur, Shajapur, Vidisha, and Bhopal.

The situation is caused by the trough line passing through Madhya Pradesh, an active low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, and a cyclonic circulation system. The low-pressure area is currently located near southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh coast and is likely to move west-northwest. Cyclonic activity is also observed over Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, and the northeast Arabian Sea, collectively impacting Madhya Pradesh.

Heavy Rain Expected Again on 17-18 August

The weather department states that several districts will witness heavy rain on 17 August, with an even stronger system becoming active from 18 August. Many areas may experience extremely heavy rainfall. People are advised to stay alert and avoid going near rivers and streams.

82% Rainfall Achieved So Far, Only 6.5 Inches Short

The average rainfall in the state is considered 37 inches. So far, 30.5 inches have been recorded, which is 82 percent of the average. The state now requires only 6.5 inches more rainfall to meet its annual quota. Notably, this season has seen about 25 percent more rainfall than average. Eastern MP (Jabalpur, Sagar, Shahdol, Rewa divisions) has recorded 31% more than average, while Western MP (Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Chambal, Narmadapuram divisions) has seen 20% more. Ten districts, including Gwalior, have already reached their season quota, but the situation remains relatively weak in Indore and Ujjain divisions.

Monsoon Makes a Strong Comeback in August

While rainfall in June and July was satisfactory, it weakened at the start of August. However, in the second half of August, the monsoon has returned vigorously. Meteorologists expect this pattern to continue till the end of the month, with light to moderate rain likely in different areas for the next six to seven days.

Relief for Farmers and General Public

The heavy rains are expected to benefit Kharif crops such as rice, soybean, and maize. Water inflow will increase in reservoirs and dams. However, extremely heavy rainfall in some regions may create flood-like situations, prompting the administration to increase vigilance in affected districts.
