New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget 2026-27 in Parliament on Sunday. Union Health Minister JP Nadda described the budget as a welfare-oriented plan that will provide new direction to the youth and the health sector.
He stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the budget presented by Finance Minister Sitharaman is inclusive and comprehensive, aiming to establish India as the world’s largest economic power. “This is a budget for the country’s youth. I congratulate Prime Minister Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and their entire team for this historic self-reliant India budget,” he added.
Nadda highlighted the government’s commitment to making healthcare accessible to all citizens, pointing out that the health sector budget has increased by 176 percent over the last 12 years. This year, over Rs 1.05 lakh crore has been allocated to health, which is nearly 9 percent higher than last year’s allocation.
The minister welcomed the focus on mental health in this budget. He praised the announcement to upgrade central psychiatric institutions in Ranchi and Tezpur and the establishment of NIMHANS in northern India. The creation of the WHO Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar was noted as a proud achievement for all Indians. Along with the increase in the health budget, emphasis has also been placed on research and development to strengthen the health sector.
He also commended the proposal to strengthen CDSCO to maintain world-class quality standards for medicines manufactured in India. Under the Bio-Pharma Strength Initiative, the government plans to invest Rs 10,000 crore in the biopharma sector over the next five years, promoting domestic production of modern biological medicines and biosimilars. The establishment of three new NIPER institutes and the upgrade of seven existing ones were described as historic steps for pharma sector development. Additionally, three special chemical parks are planned to be developed in states to boost the chemical industry.
Addressing the rise of non-communicable diseases due to changing lifestyles, the budget proposes empowering allied healthcare institutions. This will help train over one lakh professionals in the next five years, creating employment opportunities for youth and improving healthcare quality. The plan to set up trauma and emergency centres in every district hospital will ensure quick and accessible medical care for the public. The budget also significantly increases funding for medical research and innovation through ICMR and the Department of Health Research.
JP Nadda emphasized that the budget’s main objective is to sustain economic growth, provide equal opportunities to all sections of society, and advance the nation with the spirit of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.” He said the budget presents a strong framework for rural development, the poor, farmers, youth, women, and industrial growth.
