
Chandigarh, April 28: The Haryana Assembly approved the formation of a special committee focused on women’s empowerment during a special one-day session on Monday. This initiative will make Haryana the first state to take such a step under the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. The proposal was presented by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mahipal Dhanda.
At the conclusion of the session, Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan announced the establishment of a nine-member special committee on women’s empowerment, following a request from Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The committee will include five women members and will serve a one-year term.
Chief Minister Saini expressed gratitude to the Speaker and the members of the House for approving the committee’s formation. He stated that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering women and will serve as a milestone in the journey toward women’s empowerment.
The Congress party boycotted the session and held a symbolic protest outside the Assembly.
During the session, Chief Minister Saini emphasized that no society can truly progress until women are guaranteed dignity, equal opportunities, and a decisive role in governance and nation-building.
Reflecting this commitment, the Chief Minister proposed a significant measure advocating for 33% reservation for women in state assemblies, similar to provisions in the Lok Sabha. The proposal was passed by voice vote in the House.
Saini also referred to the broader national vision for building a developed India by 2047, highlighting that women are one of the four key pillars of this resolution. He noted that women, including the poor, youth, and farmers, are essential for achieving the goal of a developed India. He stressed that concrete steps have been taken to ensure women’s participation in governance under national leadership.
He mentioned the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, passed in 2023, which aims to ensure 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. Although the law was initially expected to be implemented by 2034, efforts are being made to expedite its enforcement by 2029. He also referenced the special session of Parliament held in April to advance this historic law and strengthen women’s representation in legislative bodies.
