New Delhi, August 4: Congress MP Harish Meena commented on the recent victory of Jan Suraj in the Bankipur by-election and addressed various current issues, including the recent protests at Jantar Mantar. He hailed Prashant Kishor‘s win as a triumph for democracy.
In response to the Bankipur assembly by-election results, Meena stated, “This is a victory for democracy in India. It indicates that people have realized the importance of voting based on merit rather than caste and religion. The public has chosen Prashant Kishor. If citizens vote based on merit, it signifies a win for Indian values, which is a positive sign.”
Regarding the protests at Jantar Mantar being labeled as anti-national, he remarked, “I oppose this characterization. Everyone has the right to express their views. It was a youth movement that sought permission from the government to protest peacefully. What was the need for the brutality displayed on July 20? An AK-47 was fired in Patna.”
On the acquittal of former Wrestling Federation of India president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, Meena said, “This is a judicial process. I believe that women in Indian society are a vulnerable group and need both protection and encouragement. Women should never feel powerless or unheard. The treatment of female wrestlers by the Delhi police was condemnable. Everyone must respect the court’s decision.”
He also addressed Taslima Nasreen’s support for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and her call for the closure of madrasas, stating, “Unnecessary politics is being played regarding the UCC. This is similar to the politics surrounding the national anthem; everyone supported it, so it was brought forth. I don’t think anyone is opposing the UCC. It should not become a matter of controversy or political strife.”
