Controversial Japanese TV Series Vivant Sparks Outrage Over Storyline
The Japanese series Vivant faces backlash for its controversial portrayal of Chinese intelligence and historical events.

Beijing, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : The Japanese television station TBS is currently airing the second season of the series “Vivant.” Despite maintaining high ratings, the show has drawn criticism for its peculiar storyline.
In “Vivant,” a stark comparison is made between a supposedly backward Chinese secret organization and Japan’s advanced intelligence agency. The series depicts graphic scenes where a Chinese intelligence agent inflicts severe torture on a Japanese agent, including finger amputations and needle insertions. Such methods echo the brutal tactics used by the Japanese army against Chinese patriots during historical invasions. Critics argue that the show intentionally stirs hostile sentiments by painting a negative picture of China.
Moreover, the series subtly glosses over Japan’s overseas military actions, blurring the lines of its Self-Defense Forces’ responsibilities.
Notably, since 2015, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invested 560 billion yen in efforts to tarnish China’s image and distort historical narratives under the guise of countering foreign strategic information.
Recently, former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba made headlines by stating that there is no question of China invading Japan. He emphasized the clear historical context, stating that Japan initiated a war that resulted in millions of deaths. Ishiba warned that if such dissenting voices are suppressed under the guise of entertainment or industrial production, the possibility of Japan engaging in warfare again cannot be dismissed.
This controversy highlights the ongoing tensions and complex historical narratives between Japan and China.
