Karnataka Chief Minister Justifies Milk Price Hike to Protect Farmers
Karnataka CM D.K. Shivakumar defends an 8-rupee increase in milk prices, emphasizing the need to support local farmers.

Bengaluru, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar defended the recent increase in milk prices during a cabinet meeting on Thursday. He stated that the 8-rupee hike in Nandini milk prices is a necessary step to protect farmers who have been advocating for price adjustments over the past few years.
When questioned about the potential burden on consumers due to the price rise, Shivakumar emphasized the importance of supporting farmers. “Without farmers, we wouldn’t have milk. Is it possible to consume milk without them?” he remarked, adding that previous discussions among ministers had already addressed this issue.
Shivakumar pointed out that costs for plastic packaging, diesel, and petrol have all risen, contributing to increased transportation expenses for milk. He noted that demands for price adjustments ranged from 12 to 15 rupees. “After consulting with various stakeholders, we arrived at this decision,” he explained.
He further clarified that consumers pay 30 to 35 rupees for a liter of water. Compared to neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Karnataka’s milk prices are lower. “Prices were so low here that milk was being sent to Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. This needed to be addressed,” he said.
Shivakumar also mentioned that demand for Nandini ghee remains high, particularly in Tirupati, where consumers trust the brand. He acknowledged that the government is providing economic incentives to support farmers, leading to this decision.
He added that both the Assembly and the Legislative Council had legislators requesting a price increase, which could not be addressed earlier due to the election cycle. “Now that the elections are over, we have made this decision,” he confirmed.
Regarding the increase in bus fares, he noted the transportation department has faced significant losses and lacks funds for diesel. The government is offering free bus travel for women, and he stated that the transportation department would need to decide on fare adjustments.
Tensions surrounding this decision highlight the balance between consumer costs and the welfare of farmers in Karnataka.
