Gurgaon, June 16: Gurugram police have detained 13 Bangladeshi nationals during an operation targeting illegal immigrants in the city.
Addressing the media, ACP Crime Naveen Sharma stated that the search operation was initiated to ensure national security and maintain law and order.
He mentioned that authorities received information about several Bangladeshi citizens residing illegally in the city without valid documents. The Crime Branch apprehended these individuals from various areas within Gurugram.
According to police officials, some of the detained individuals were living in slums, while others were working at construction sites.
Following the search and interrogation, the 13 individuals were taken into custody. Police recovered Bangladeshi identification cards from them, and they were found using phone numbers based in Bangladesh to communicate with family members.
Some of these individuals had been in India for two months, while others had been here for four months, having entered the country through the West Bengal border.
The Gurugram police have been conducting search operations for several days.
ACP Sharma further explained that all detained individuals will be held at a deportation center in Manesar until legal formalities are completed, after which they will be deported.
Search and verification operations are ongoing in various colonies, sectors, and slum areas throughout Gurugram.
Naveen Sharma urged citizens, especially hotel owners, landlords, and employers at construction sites, to properly verify identification documents and ensure police verification of tenants, domestic helpers, and employees working in hotels and businesses.
The police clarified that Indian citizens and legally residing foreign nationals need not be concerned about this operation.
Meanwhile, as part of a campaign to deport all Bangladeshi nationals who have entered illegally, this group is currently targeted by ISI-backed elements involved in disruptive activities.
The primary focus is currently on West Bengal and Assam, but this campaign is expected to expand nationwide over time.
