Manisa, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : A shooting outside a vocational high school in Manisa, western Turkey, on Tuesday left 11 students injured, two of whom are reported to be in critical condition. The police apprehended a minor suspect shortly after the incident.
According to Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, an unidentified assailant opened fire on the street outside the school. The suspect was taken into custody along with their parents. This incident marks the third significant shooting in Turkey this year. Earlier in April, a series of attacks in southern Turkey had sparked widespread outrage among the public.
Media outlets, including the Turkish news agency IHA and private channel NTV, reported that among the injured were students. The DHA news agency released CCTV footage showing the assailant wearing black jeans and a black jacket, carrying what appeared to be a rifle.
IHA also shared a photo of the suspect holding a gun, though in this instance, the individual was seen fleeing the scene. Footage from the school showed police apprehending a man in a white shirt while a woman screamed nearby. Bystanders gathered at the school fence, recording the incident on their mobile phones.
The governor’s office announced that an investigation into the shooting has commenced. This attack occurred five months after two school shootings raised significant concerns about safety in Turkish educational institutions.
In April, a 14-year-old boy opened fire at a school in the southern province of Kahramanmaraş, resulting in the deaths of a teacher and several students aged 10 to 11. The assailant was killed at the scene. Just a day before that, another teenager opened fire at their former high school in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, injuring 16 people before taking his own life when confronted by police. Following these incidents, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan dismissed the Deputy Minister of Education and pledged to tighten gun ownership regulations.
