Gulmarg to Implement Odd-Even Traffic System from July 5 to Alleviate Congestion

Gulmarg, July 1: In response to increasing traffic pressure and to enhance tourist convenience, the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) has decided to implement an odd-even traffic system on a pilot basis from July 5 to August 5. This initiative aims to reduce traffic jams and ensure that visitors can reach their destinations on time.

Tariq Hussain, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GDA, stated in an interview, “Gulmarg is one of the country’s premier tourist destinations, attracting a large number of visitors each year. To facilitate tourists, an order has been issued urging transporters, tour operators, and tourists to comply with the new system.”

He emphasized, “Gulmarg’s roads and parking facilities have limited capacity. Therefore, it has become essential to regulate vehicle movement so that tourists can enjoy their visit without any hassle.”

Hussain noted that there have been numerous complaints from tourists in recent days. Videos circulating on social media depicted individuals struggling to reach Gulmarg on time due to traffic jams. Consequently, many tourists missed out on the cable car service and other activities. This prompted the administration to introduce the odd-even traffic system as a pilot project.

According to the CEO, on odd-numbered days, only vehicles with odd registration numbers will be allowed to enter Gulmarg. Conversely, on even-numbered days, only vehicles with even registration numbers will be permitted. He clarified that the goal of this system is not to inconvenience anyone but to manage traffic effectively and enhance the overall experience for all tourists.

“This is currently a pilot project, and improvements will be made based on the experiences and suggestions received during this period,” Hussain added. He also mentioned that a meeting with local transport operators will be held soon to gather their feedback, ensuring effective traffic management that includes all stakeholders. The administration hopes this initiative will improve traffic conditions in Gulmarg, reduce environmental pressure, and allow tourists to complete their journeys on time.
