Gujarat Shines on Global Sports Stage, Says Minister Jayaram Gamit

Gandhinagar, May 12: Gujarat is capturing international attention not only for its development but also for its growing presence in global sports, stated Sports Minister Jayaram Gamit during the inauguration of the Asian Weightlifting Championship 2026 in Gandhinagar on Tuesday.

The championship commenced at Mahatma Mandir, featuring over 400 athletes, technicians, and coaches from 29 Asian countries, including India.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Gamit remarked, “Gujarat is now recognized worldwide, not just for its development but also for its increasing role in international sports events.”

He emphasized that hosting such high-level competitions is crucial for both Indian and state athletes, as it provides them with exposure to international standards, boosting their confidence and performance.

Gamit added, “These events will contribute to the long-term development of sports talent in the country.”

Highlighting initiatives under the national sports policy, he mentioned that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Khelo India” and “Khelo Bharat” programs, Gujarat has developed world-class sports infrastructure.

Currently, the state operates 39 sports schools and excellence centers at the district level, aimed at identifying and training talent at the grassroots level.

He also announced plans to establish a high-performance center for athletes in Gandhinagar, expected to be operational by 2027.

Gamit referred to India’s upcoming international sports calendar, noting that Ahmedabad is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, while the country is advancing its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The World Police and Fire Games in 2029 will further solidify Gujarat’s identity as a major sports hub.

Mohammed Hasan Jaloud, President of the International Weightlifting Federation, praised India’s successful organization of the championship despite global tensions, highlighting the participation of athletes from 29 countries.

He expressed the federation’s readiness to support India in hosting similar international events and thanked the central and state governments, along with the Asian Weightlifting Federation and the Indian Weightlifting Federation, for their cooperation.

Mohammed bin Yusuf Al Mana, President of the Asian Weightlifting Federation, stated that this championship symbolizes unity among Asian countries, referring to them as “one sports family.”

He commended the event’s organization and wished success to all participating athletes.

Indian Weightlifting Federation President Sahadev Yadav and Sabina Yadav welcomed the participants and provided information about the championship.
