Washington, June 29: U.S. Republican Senator Thom Tillis expressed skepticism on Sunday regarding Iran’s adherence to the ceasefire agreement with the United States. He stated that the leadership in Tehran cannot be trusted, and recent military developments have only heightened his concerns.
During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Tillis remarked, “I do not trust the Iranian leadership and the mullahs to uphold their commitments. We are already seeing signs of this.”
His comments come at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Iran of severe consequences if it continues to violate the ceasefire agreement.
Reports indicate that there has been renewed gunfire and military action between U.S. and Iranian forces, raising questions about the stability of the agreement reached earlier this month.
Tillis noted that several ceasefires have occurred over the past few months, but they have not lasted long. He stated, “This agreement was based on a 60-day framework, but I do not believe Iran will adhere to it in good faith.”
He also referenced the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, emphasizing that any new agreement must be enforced rigorously to be considered trustworthy.
Tensions have particularly escalated around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy transport routes.
The recent events have sparked new concerns about global energy supply and the future of U.S.-Iran negotiations. While both countries have expressed a desire to continue talks, the ongoing military clashes raise doubts about the likelihood of a comprehensive and sustainable agreement.
