Dehradun, June 29: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed his condolences over the passing of the mother of renowned Indian shooter, Padma Shri late Jaspal Rana. Jaspal Rana himself passed away earlier this month at the age of 49.
In a post on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Dhami wrote, “I have received the extremely sad news of the demise of Narayan Singh Rana’s wife and the revered mother of the famous Indian shooter Padma Shri late Jaspal Rana. My heartfelt condolences are with the grieving family during this difficult time. May God grant the departed soul a place at His feet and give the bereaved family the strength to endure this unbearable sorrow.”
Jaspal Rana was born on June 28, 1976, in Tehri Garhwal and passed away on June 12, 2026, in a hospital in Delhi. He gained national recognition at the age of just 12, winning a silver medal at the 31st National Shooting Championship in 1988. In 1994, he set a world record at the junior level during the World Shooting Championship held in Milan, Italy. He represented India at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Rana won a total of 15 medals at the Commonwealth Games, including nine gold medals across four editions from 1994 to 2006. He also secured eight medals at the Asian Games, four of which were gold. One of his most memorable achievements was at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, where he won three gold medals despite suffering from a high fever and equaled the world record score of 590 in the 25-meter center fire pistol event.
After retiring as an athlete, Rana became active in coaching, playing a crucial role in training future shooters for the country. His efforts were evident at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where his protégé Manu Bhaker won two medals, becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals (bronze) at a single Olympics. Jaspal was honored with the Arjuna Award at just 18 years old and received the Padma Shri at 21. In 2020, he was also awarded the Dronacharya Award.
