Philadelphia, May 25: Rhys Hoskins delivered a crucial RBI double in the sixth inning, while Travis Bazzana added a homer in the eighth, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.
Hoskins has a notable history of impactful performances against his former team in Philadelphia, and he continued that trend. After Chase DeLauter drew a two-out walk in the sixth, Hoskins doubled down the third base line, bringing DeLauter home and giving Cleveland a two-run advantage. In nine games played in Philadelphia as an opponent, including two with Milwaukee over the past two seasons and this year with Cleveland, Hoskins has recorded five extra-base hits—three homers and two doubles.
The Guardians opened the scoring with an RBI single from Steven Kwan in the fifth inning. Bazzana then hit his third solo homer of the season in the eighth, contributing to Cleveland’s impressive run, winning eight out of their last nine games.
Parker Messick (6-1) secured the win, throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits, and striking out six. Cade Smith closed the game with a perfect ninth inning, achieving his MLB-leading 18th save.
Bryce Harper accounted for the Phillies’ only run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, scoring Brandon Marsh, who had tripled to start the inning. Philadelphia has struggled recently, losing four of their last five games.
Andrew Painter (1-5) took the loss for the Phillies, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three over 6 1/3 innings, marking his longest outing of the season.
