Ranchi, February 8: A horrific murder has shaken the Sonahatu area of Ranchi district, where a 25-year-old man was brutally killed. Police discovered the victim’s severed head and torso along the banks of the Kanchi River on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Harihar Mahto.
According to police reports, the body was found near the Kanchi River, in front of the Edarmahatu-Marchadih village. Initial investigations revealed that the victim’s private parts had also been mutilated.
Family members disclosed that Harihar had been in a romantic relationship with a woman from the village. Allegations suggest that this woman had summoned him for a meeting. Harihar left his home around 6:30 PM on January 31, 2026, but did not return. His family searched extensively for him, but found no leads.
After three days of uncertainty, the family reported his disappearance to the Sonahatu police station on February 3, 2026. Following this, police initiated an investigation and intensified their search based on technical evidence. This led to the grim discovery of his body along the Kanchi River on Sunday.
It has been reported that Harihar Mahto was married two years ago and had a one-month-old son. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the entire village, with family members in deep mourning.
Prem Pradeep, the officer in charge of Sonahatu police station, stated that the seriousness of the case necessitates a thorough investigation from all angles. Further actions will be based on the post-mortem report and call detail records. Police have detained a couple suspected of involvement in the murder and are currently interrogating them. Authorities claim that they will soon reveal more details about the case.
