Ujjain, June 13: The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed a grand ceremony on Saturday, marking the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal during the auspicious day of Jyestha Krishna Paksha Trayodashi. The deity was adorned with a beautiful decoration featuring bel leaves and a Rudraksha mala.
Early on Saturday, after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerbhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal following the divine decoration and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with the chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and the recitation of mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the water abhishek of Baba Mahakal commenced amidst the chanting of mantras. The deity was bathed with Panchamrit, made from milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar, and fruit juices. Baba Mahakal was further adorned with bel leaves, a crown, and a Rudraksha mala.
The temple priest conducted the Maha Aarti, allowing a large number of devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. Many devotees queued up from late at night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity.
Traditionally, ashes from cremation grounds were offered to Mahakal, but now, a special preparation of cow dung from Kapila cows and medicinal herbs is used for the Bhasma. During the Bhasma Aarti, it is mandatory for men to wear traditional dhoti-sola and for women to wear sarees.
The Aarti of Baba Mahakal is renowned across the country and abroad, attracting not only the general public but also prominent personalities. To maintain order during the event, a significant number of police personnel are deployed around the temple.
