Ujjain, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain held its spectacular Bhasma Aarti on Sunday, September 13, attracting a significant number of devotees. This event coincided with the second day of the Bhadrapada month, marking a special occasion for worshippers.
Early in the morning, after seeking blessings from Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti took place, the atmosphere filled with the chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal,” echoing throughout the temple complex, accompanied by the ringing of bells, conch shells, and the recitation of mantras.
As the temple opened, devotees participated in the water abhishekam of Lord Mahakal, using a mixture known as Panchamrit, made from milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. The rituals included the offering of water with the first bell ringing, followed by the lighting of camphor. Lord Mahakal was adorned with bhang, tripund, and trinetr, and decorated with a garland of flowers.
The chief priest conducted the Mahaarati, allowing a large number of devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti. Many had queued since the previous night to catch a glimpse of their beloved deity. During the Bhasma Aarti, traditional attire was mandatory, with men wearing dhoti-sola and women donning sarees.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Lord Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Lord Mahakal reveals his form to the devotees. This event draws numerous worshippers to the sacred city of Ujjain, showcasing the enduring spirit of faith and tradition.
